I love this cake. I made it by using two glass Anchor Hocking baking bowls. I used store-bought icing mixed to the right color using confectioners sugar to make it thick and make sure the “stars” in the icing hold their shape. I used Wilton brand decorator tips and disposable bags. I used the leaf tip to make the fern leaves beneath the little lady.

I used a heart shape cookie cutter as a guide for the heart-shaped spots and used black sugar edible glitter to make this little lady sparkle. The mouth and legs are Twizzlers with sterling silver bendable wire inserted in the middle to hold shape. The eyes were made out of bakers white chocolate, using blue food coloring for the big blue eyes. She is just precious!

We made the sheet cake in layers using white icing that we dyed a vibrant purple color in between. My sister cut the sheet cake to be a leaf-like design and then we chose our green to add to white icing and iced the sheet cake (after all cakes cooled off of course). After that, we placed a round cake (already cut to shape with a knife and patience… and iced red with the no taste food dye) we made on top of the sheet cake towards one corner.

Using black sheet fondant (you can buy in any store) my sister covered the “tail” and “head” of the ladybug. Meanwhile we used different food colorings, added to more white icing, to color for the cupcakes. Using (any tip you prefer) I piped out the tops of all the cupcakes and then used the smallest tip to pipe the line down the “back” of each ladybug cupcake with black icing including a black “head” and 3-4 dot/bursts on each “wing”.

Neither one of us was up to piping out flowers between soccer games and field trips so I bought pre-made flowers and butterfly wings. Between taking turns piping out the designs, leaves, and finishing touches to the ladybug; we added black m&m’s for the dots, blue ones for the “eyes” and colorful ones randomly on the cake along with placing the wings along the base of the sheet cake and flowers around the main thing.

All in all, we just let creativity lead us down whichever road it wanted to take us. As a finishing touch, I used red sugar crystals on the main ladybug to make her glimmer; and my sister used the colorful edible sprinkles/beads to give texture to the leaf.

Hopefully, if you want to do this, this cake included 5 funfetti cake mixes, about 7 white icings, 2 black tube icings, another cake mix for the cupcakes, whatever food colorings you choose, and lots of laughter with a friend to do this with…

A lovely picture book with a great message, May 4, 2010

“The Ladybug and Me” is a simple yet delightful tale about a young girl who meets a ladybug under a tree one summer morning and learns a wonderful lesson. The ladybug beckons the girl to fly but the young girl responds, “I don’t have wings to fly.” I loved the message conveyed in this book, i.e. that one does not need wings to fly, just a healthy dose of imagination. The themes of positive thinking and believing in one’s self is aptly conveyed in a manner that children can easily relate to, and the vibrant illustrations by artist Serge Eisenberg enhance the story, and will especially appeal to young children.

The text by author Michael Soler flows smoothly, in an almost sing-song manner which delighted my daughter (who is five and is a beginning reader). She managed to read this book all by herself, and I feel that this can also serve as a beginning reader or early reader for children. I would recommend this book for children ages 4-8, and can see this being utilized in the Pre-K and up classroom – the reading activity can be followed up with a class discussion where children can be encouraged to vocalize their dreams and aspirations, and perhaps even sketch/draw their ‘dreams’ (older children can write about their dreams). “The Ladybug and Me” is a fun, vivid, and delightful read with a positive message! Help other

I believe in LadyBugs!, August 5, 2009

By K. Callender (Connecticut. USA)
The LadyBug and Me by Michael Soler and illustrated by Serge Eisenberg is about a child who meets a special new friend, a LadyBug. This ladybug teaches her that anything is possible when you use your imagination and believe. Before flying away she tells the little girl something every child should know. “Your life is a gift and has a great story to tell.”

The LadyBug and Me is designed for early readers and includes a simple question that can be used to get kids thinking and sharing ideas or even be used as a classroom writing exercise starter for older children. The question is, “What do you believe?

I always love a book that encourages children to use their imagination and reminds them that anything is possible if they believe in themselves. I also love the way the illustrator, Serge Eisenberg combines real photos with his art work. It really helps children make the connection between the worlds of reality and imagination.

Solid purchase for preschoolers, May 24, 2010

By Alice M. Dinizo “J.B. DiNizo” (Toms River, New Jersey)
This is a gentle, imaginary tale, written in verse, of a young girl’s conversation with a “talking” ladybug who encourages the girl to believe in herself. “When you believe, the world can be anything you want it to be.”
This is a nice paperback addition to preschool collections, whether for home or school. Preschool teachers will be able to use “The Lady Bug and Me” to teach lessons on imagination and the power of believing in yourself that the young child can appreciate. Colorful, uncluttered full-page illustrations support the text.
